About us
The Priboj Homeland Museum was founded in 1992 by the Municipality of Priboj. His founder was Savo Derikonjić, a graduate archaeologist at the University of Belgrade, with many years of experience in field research. The reason for the study on the need to establish the Museum were numerous archaeological finds in the territory of the Priboj municipality, chronologically dated from the Starčevo culture until the late Middle Ages. It was conceived as a museum of a complex type, with a native character, and today it consists of: archaeological, artistic, and ethnographic departments. The Historical Department, Documentation Center, Conservation and Souvenir Workshop are in the development phase. The Archaeological Department contains prehistoric, ancient and medieval collections. The art department has three legacies: Nadežda Nada Vitorović (painter), Nevena Vitorović (collector), Nail Ćelović (painter). The Ethnographic Department is the legacy of the internationally recognized professor of hydrology Vujuca Jevđević (memorial house and auxiliary building, part of professional literature, documentation and acknowledgments). Within the permanent exhibition, the work of this department is presented by a series of objects for everyday use originating from households in the territory of the municipality of Priboj, from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century, as well as photographs about fashion in Priboj from the same period.
The museum is located in the center of the Old Town in two houses – exhibition and administrative part, and in the courtyard there is an amphitheater and a lapidarium. In addition to the Jevđević Memorial House and an auxiliary building in another part of the city, the Museum today has a total of four building units with an area of 700 sqm. meters and two yards on an area of 1300 kV. Meters.
During the three decades of its existence, it has been the holder or participated in a large number of scientific and archaeological research projects, among which the most important are: caves and prehistoric mounds of the Priboj region, copper mine and mining settlement Jarmovac, Uvac Monastery, St. Nicholas Monastery in Banja and Monastery of St George in Mažić, the medieval town of Jagat, the medieval necropolis of Crkvine (on the left bank of the Lim near hospital). At the same time, other departments developed through the collection and processing of exhibits, the development of exhibition activities and occasional editions in three editions of the Museum’s publishing activities: “Limes”, “Testudo” and “Jagat”.
