Monastery of St. Nicholas in Banja

In the period from 2005 to 2009, the Republic Institute continued archaeological research in the monastery of St. Nicholas in Banja near Priboj. The porch of the church of St. Nicholas, the remains of the church of St. Elijah and the remains of the tower in the northwestern part of the monastery walls were explored. Preliminary reports on the results of the research were published in the catalogue of the exhibition St. Nicholas in Dabar, Priboj 2006. After that, the next protective archaeological excavations in the Banja Monastery near Priboj were carried out between June 6 and July 5, 2012. They include the exterior of the southern wall discovered the previous year, when its line of extension and construction phases were determined. Along the outer side of the fence wall from the 14th century, which was restored in the 16th century, there are buildings older than this medieval phase, which probably belong to the monastery complex from the time of the proclamation of St. Nicholas of Dabar as the seat of the bishopric in 1219/1220.

These buildings were destroyed in an extremely large and strong fire, when the stones in their foundation feet burned and cracked. It is a large room, one of which has a wide staircase on the north side, towards the port. This staircase, together with the north wall of the building, was incorporated into the restoration from the 14th century, while the restoration in the 16th century negated it. It was noted that the southern fence of this oldest phase of the monastery complex, unfortunately, was destroyed during the breaking of the local economic road in the 1990 s.
